Tasting Notes

Tempranillo is Spain’s noble red grape, renowned for producing graceful, ageworthy wines. Although a relative new comer, this variety is quickly gaining prominence in Australia amongst wine producers and consumers alike.

“la Reto” loosely translated from Spanish means “The Challenge”. Produced from 100% Barossa Valley fruit. Our initial challenge was to source fruit of the desired quality and personality. Select vineyards from across the Barossa Valley, one in Koonunga in the North and one in the Western Barossa near the township Greenock.
Fruit was hand picked from the third week of February to mid March and destemmed into small open fermenters. The must was cold soaked at 12 to 15 degrees C with daily juice pump overs for three days until fermentation commenced. Ferments were then allowed to warm up and were hand plunged with juice pump over twice daily to extract the flavour, colour and tannins. After eight days on skin the wine was pressed, settled and racked to seasoned 225lt French oak barriqes where it was matured for 18 months prior to final blending.

Characterised by deep purple-red hues, the 2013 la Retro exhibits flavours and aromas of red and blue berries, plums, sarsaparilla and cocoa woven together b y supple. Finley textured tannins. The palate is vibrant with excellent acid balance.
Supple, earthy tannins ensure that this wine may be enjoyed now as and accompaniment to food or will reward further cellaring.
